Hi I'm Lyssie (19) I was ill and had big surgery on Scoliosis so am starting an Access to HE (1 year corse) in Nursing in September. I am so excited to get in there and study for my dream. I am about to order a few Nursing books from play.com...
I want to be a Theatre Nurse (either orthopaedics or cardiothoracic) in a private hospital, hopefully in London. I live in Guildford now, so I would be training at the University of Surrey which is ment to be a great place to train.(apparently??) Well that's all I can think to say at the moment. Ohhhh, and my interview/assessment for the access corse is on the 30th of June so I am excited about that. In the letter is says it lasts for 2 hours. I'm just so eagar to get the ball rolling, hehe. Lyssie xx |

Hello and welcome alyssa.star
I have been reading with much interest in your other posts here as to your own medical condition and a post that you made in the mental health section. For others that do not know about your condition then I am providing a link so they can view if you don't mind
Link As to your other post in the mental health section then I can fully understand as my eldest daughter, now 17 self harmed about a year ago and it was a cry for help as she thought I was not listening to her
The scars are fading now, but I as a parent feel that I should have seen the signs and I did not and for that I feel guilty! Much work has been done to try and bridge the gap in our relationship and to the point that my middle daughter is now living with her dad. My middle child took up most of my time in regards after school clubs like gymnastics, dance gym, gifted and talented clubs at their school and me running her there and everywhere and yes she is very gifted and I wanted to make sure she got the best of everything and I concentrated largely upon her!
My eldest obviously felt left out as she was not praised enough for the talents she does have and that is in art and she is a sociable person that finds talking to strangers easy and has a great quality for listening! Two sides of a coin in two daughters
Anyway to get back to the subject in hand then I think you have come a long way to be doing an access to nursing and I can see you as becoming an exceptional nurse if you can stick the course. Its hard, but you have been through much worse so it seems and I wish you all the luck in the world and if you need any help (course related or emotional) then please feel free to post or pm me!
Regards Pure. |

Wow, (sorry I didn't post sooner) thanks Pure.
Well being a self harmer myself, I'm sure you're doing a perfect job of being a wonderful mother to your kids, you're certainly seeming like a nice lady. What I've found is that I have problems talking about my worries to other people. I bottle things up and that's why I self harmed. Also I feel lonely when I'm alone and my mum's left for work. I can't stress enough how much I have used distraction techiniques. For example, listening to (HAPPY!) music (depressing music can just bring you down even more)... clean my room, read, go for a walk, text a friend, relaxation, excercises. There are so many more but my mind has gone blank. I am so excited about starting the access course. I just want to get learning.xx |

Thats good advice alyssa.star
Another good way to catch up on current nursing news and ect.. is through Nursing Standard or the Nursing times magazines, both of which you can buy at most reputable newsagents like WHSmiths and inside you can then subscribe to the magazine for cheaper than you can buy it each week!
Good luck and if you need any help and get no joy here then there is always studen-nurse with lots of people there to help you out Link |

I deal with self harm at work and also had a friend admitted to hospital because of serious self harm. It is a tough thing to deal with and so much emotional stuff inside the harmer, my heart goes out to anyone whom is going through or been through thi and for their fmailies. I am still learning how to deal with people whom harm, usually I give allocated but restricted time on helping them air their feelings, equipment to clean up after they harm, work with families to try to ease any pressures... I don't have the answers but am hoping my other skills get me through to the person crying out for help.
Noone is perfect, noone should have expectations of being a perfect parent (because it aint easy), we are the best that we can be, and noone is an expert no matter what titles or initials behind their names. We are mere human beings dealing with life the best we can and hopefully despite pitfalls along the way we get through and find support when we need it. This site is terrrific and I can't praise the people on here enough that includes PURE whom puts heart and soul into the site and is one of the nicest people here. The other all have their qualities too so never be afraid to ask questions. keep using the site and 'go for your dreams' and be successful. karen |
